We bring new life to your broken engine!
Cast iron welding is theoretically possible, but the high carbon content makes the material hard and brittle. That‘s exactly what should be avoided at dynamic loads and why Metalock has developed a specialized and certified „cold repair process“.
Thanks to the integration of so-called Metalock Keys the process is a sustainable, safe and effective repair of cast iron – without welding, without heat distortion and in many cases even without dismantling.
We have put together three interesting repair cases as examples – see for yourself:
A particularly rare piece from the 30s. Even though the long-stroke eight-cylinder in-line engine with 5 l capacity is solidly designed, fatigue damages of the material after many decades may arise or components like conrods break through the engine housing when the crankshaft is getting defective.
In this case, however, a frost damage occurred. Our customer tried to cover the broken area with a screwed plate – unfortunately without success. We inspected the area structurally and defined the corresponding cutouts.
The area to be repaired is cut out and prepared for the „Metalocking“. Then a new fitting is individually manufactured and seated.
The repair is successfully performed, the housing has already been roughly grinded. In the next step the tightness will be checked with a water pressure test.
Also, in this case it is a repair project of a damaged housing, where even one of the four cylinders had been affected. The customers‘ welding attempts couldn‘t solve the problem ...
Removal of the affected housing area and preparation. In the next step a new fitting is individually manufactured and seated.
The repair has largely been completed, you can still see the inserted and pressed in Metalock Keys. The final grinding and polishing for a perfect surface is the last step – but here not documented anymore.
A classic from the 20s/30s, series K. Despite its simplicity and robustness, the ravages of time may affect various units and components ...
In this case, however, the front of the water tank burst, because it had not been emptied before the frost came ...
The Metalock Keys, which connect the body to the burst-out front wall, are already set. The next intermediate step is to implement the Metalock screws along the line of the fracture – on the top right the beginning of it can already been seen. The whole procedure is available as a video animation further down the page.
As if nothing had happened! The water tank is perfectly repaired, pressure-tight and ready for the paint finish ...
If you simply want to print out our repair cases, stick them on the bulletin board or archive them digitally, you can download the corresponding PDF version at any time. We offer them in single-page view (for printing) and in double-page view (for electronic archiving or forwarding).

The Metalock process is a simple but very effective method to repair breaks and cracks in cast iron components without welding. This “locking method” is recognized worldwide and registered in the Lloyd Register for the repair of certain components under certificate number MNDE / REP / 0017/06.
